LONGHOUSE POLES
The Poles

There are
four poles in the little people's long house.
- The
first pole is outside the front door. It is like a sign post. By
what is hung on it you can see what is going on inside. For instance an
eagle feather on an otter shield with a rattle snake rattle on one side and a
crane feather on the other side might mean a full men’s council was in
progress and so on.
-
The second pole is
the people’s pole, a place where anyone can go to speak, sing, ask for prayers
etc. Commonly this is a place where guests would appear to the long
house, and matters of a more public nature could be heard.
-
The third pole is
the elder's pole, where those of a more formal presence would come. Pipe
carriers, Staff Carriers, Elders, a place to conduct in a formal ceremonial
way.
-
The fourth pole
outside of the connecting door to the next long house. This is a place
the elders of the little house can council.
