Who Had the Essiac Formula?

According to the extensive research of Sheila Snow and Mali Klein the original, Native American formula consisted of eight herbs.  However, it appears that Rene Caisse did not ever reveal the complete formula to anyone.

According to the letters from Rene Caisse to Dr. Chester Stock at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Rene Caisse gave Dr. Stock one version of her "Essiac" treatment, which was simply a decoction of sheep sorrel leaves and sheep sorrel roots.  In these letters dating from 1973 to 1976 Rene Caisse referred to sheep sorrel decoction as "Essiac".  This was the injectable form of "Essiac".  Sheila Snow received this information from Dr. Stock in 1979.  In other words, Rene Caisse was simply using the word "Essiac" (her name spelled backwards) for sheep sorrel.

Rene Caisse tested and used variations of the original Native American tea.  According to Sheila Snow and Mali Klein, Rene Caisse gave versions of the Essiac formula to Pat Judson of Deering, Michigan, Gilbert Blondin of Hull, Quebec and her best friend, Mary McPherson.  Rene Caisse sold one version of the formula to David Fingard of the Resperin Corporation for the token amount of one dollar on the understanding that Resperin would conduct clinical trials to prove that Essiac had merit.  However, the promised clinical trials never happened.  The Essiac formula that Rene Caisse sold to Resperin was different than the formula that she gave to Pat Judson.  The Resperin formula contained Indian rhubarb instead of Turkey rhubarb and the burdock was a higher proportion of the formula than the Judson/Glum/McPherson formula.

Pat Judson first visited Rene Caisse in 1977 to obtain Essiac tea for herself and one other person.  Pat Judson later sold this four-herb version of the Essiac formula to Dr. Gary Glum in 1985 for $120,000.  Dr. Glum, a California chiropractor, published the four-herb Essiac formula in 1988 with the release of his book CALLING OF AN ANGEL and a video showing how to make Essiac tea.

There may have been other people to whom Rene Caisse gave versions of the Essiac formula and recipe.
